Whilst at university studying my BA Honours Graphic Communication Degree, in my final year my dissertation would be the last piece of academic writing carried out. With a plethora of creative fields to write about, I chose the subject line ‘How Minimalism Creates Favourable Brands’ and read into minimalism within design and how companies can utilise simplicity. After doing so I designed a 32 page publication that places emphasis on simplicity and the themes spoken of in my essay.

Using predominantly modernist principles for my book, Helvetica was used for type, the grid structure is modelled on the Golden Ratio, the colour scheme is monochrome, and the cover takes inspiration from Malevich’s Black Square, his simplest yet most effective work. Combining visuals and theoretical theories, overall my essay and the ideas of minimalism and the act of conveying feelings to consumers became an integral part of my academic course and helped me obtain my First.
