Dorling Kindersley (DK) partner with different organisations to help them deliver compelling content to the masses. As well as a printed book, DK and RSPB wanted to release a companion app to help people find out more about different birds from around the UK, detailing their appearance and what sounds they make.

I created designs for a minimalist app to allow an ease of function to occur. Through user testing, participants were capable of identifying birds through the apps’ search function, and they learnt more about the birds thanks to the built in audio playback feature. The styling of the app was inspired by book to make sure one medium was creatively aligned with the other, but did take on it’s own unique visuals thanks to a simple use of colour and typography. WCAG guidelines were also at the heart of the design to make sure an accessible app was delivered.
